The Veterans Of War
And Conflict
They Served Their Country On Foreign Soil,
They Dealt With Death And Pain.
When Their Country Called On Them,
"Send Me" Was Their Refrain.
They Left Their Homes And Families,
And Questioned Not The Call,
Some Returned With Battle Scars,
Others Not At All.
The Cost Of War Is Sacrifice,
A Debt That Must Be Paid,
Not By The Faint Of Heart,
But Rather By The Brave.
They Paid The Debt For You And Me,
Our Freedom To Maintain,
While We Lived In Comfort,
They Suffered Death, And Pain.
Some Returned To A Heros Welcome.
Some Returned To Scorn,
But All Of Those Returning,
Bore The Scars Of The Weary,
Tired And Worn.
While For Us The War Is Over,
To Them It Will Never End,
Yet If Tomorrow They Were Called Upon,
They Would Gladly Serve Again.
With Flowery Words We Honor Them,
But Ignore Them With Our Deeds,
By Breaking Every Promise.
When They Our Countrys Heros,
Stand In Dire Need.
Benefits Denied Them,
Or By Bureaucracy Delayed -
Oh How Quickly Weve Forgotten,
The Sacrifice They Made.
Remember The Sick And The Disabled,
The Homeless Veteran Too.
Those Gallant Men And Women,
Who Fought For Me And You.
Remember Well Their Sacrifice,
The Price Of War They Paid,
They Gave Their All Without Reserve,
That Our Freedom Might Remain.
We Must Pay The Debt We Owe Them,
And Put An End To Their Neglect.
Our Citizens And Government,
Must Show Them Due Respect.
Greater Funding For Our Homeless,
Is Not Too Much To Ask,
Funding For Veterans Projects,
An Investment That Will Last.
They Honored Us With Sacrifice,
This Brave And Dying Breed.
Surely As A Nation.
We Can Meet Their Basic Needs.
With Housing For Our Homeless,
Education And Training Too,
The Best Health Care Facilities...
And The Benefits,
To Which They Are Due.

Miss America 2000
America, I am so proud of you. So proud to be a part of you, to have served you along side so many of your sons and daughters, who fought and died for what you stand for. I have tasted of your bounty, labored in your fields, and have stood in awe as you have stretched forth your arms to welcome the tired, the poor and the hungry from other nations seeking refuge.
I have listened to those who would seek to discredit you, even destroy you, and watched as you continued to stand strong as a beacon, undaunted by those who rail against you.
My heart has melted, and I have been moved to tears time and again as Ive watched you confront the unrest from within that you have been faced with thoughout your existence, yet you have always managed to maintain peace and unity among your people, and at the same time remain the voice of freedom to the rest of the world.
Oh yes, as your people, we have our differences, our struggles that comes with diversity. But you have taught us to persevere, and to keep the faith, and in so doing we continue to move closer to your dream of liberty and justice for all.
Yes, I am proud to be a son of America, to have had the privilege to fight for all that you stand for, to eat of your bounty, and to drink from your rivers of freedom. I honor you, and those of your children who have given their all, the supreme sacrifice, to keep our way of life free, and away from those who would seek to overthrow your liberty and silence your mighty voice of freedom, God Bless America, and all who live within her shores.
